BARRY CRUMP

Barry Crump wrote many semi-autobiographical stories based on his experiences as an outdoors man, including deer culling in New Zealand and crocodile hunting in Australia.
He also wrote books for children.

John Barrie Crump (15/ 5/ 1935 - 3/ 7/ 1996) had a tough childhood in in Papatoetoe, South Auckland before leaving for a stint as a deer-stalker for the Government.
He based his first novel A Good Keen Man(1959) on these experiences, an account of a hunter who had to suffer through a series of unsuitable hunting partners.
This novel was one of the most popular in New Zealand history, quickly reprinted in large numbers, and still popular sixty years later.
Belying his gruff and unsophisticated facade, Barry was also an accomplished actor, TV personality, poet, radio host, photographer and more, and travelled the world.
Married five times he had six sons, and was awarded an MBE and OBE for services to literature.
For twelve years Crumpy and Scotty fronted a series of true Kiwi-gold television adverts for Toyota utes.
There is an homage cameo by Scotty in the film adaption of Wild Pork and Watercress, Hunt for the Wilderpeople directed by Taika Waititi in 2016.

Bastards I Have Met
cover image of Bastards I Have Met

Bastards, discovered Barry Crump one afternoon in the Timberlands hotel, out number hero's by at least 15 thousand to one. Yet there has never been a single book or poem,or TV documentary, or song,or even a speech, devoted to the common or garden bastard!
This situation had to be remedied at once. And so, from a great wealth of candidates who have come the way of New Zealand's most popular writer, Barry Crump has now distilled this first ABC of bastardry.
